Morning: Breakfast and departure time for Tolentino.
Guided tour of Tolentino (228m. above sea level). Its
name is tied to that of a hermit, preacher, and thaurnaturge St. Nicholas.
To him is dedicated the vast Basilica, one of the most
important sanctuaries in central Italy. The Gothic Chapel of
St. Nicholas, entiraly decorated with a vast cycle of frescoes
by the Rimini school of the early 14th century. The Basilica also houses
the Museo dell'Opera del Santuario and a collection
of ceramics. From the Basilica one reaches the Piazza della Liberta with
the characteristic Tower of the watches that tell the
phases of the moon., the ordinary time, the astronomical time, the days
of the week and the month of the year. In the same square, Palazzo Sangallo
houses the Museo della Caricatura, Which offers an overview
of Italian and foreign humor. Free time for refreshment.
Afternoon: The visit starts in the Rancia
Castle, which stands a few kilometres far from Tolentino town
centre. The original building was a fortified farmstead belonging to
the Fiastra Abbey, and was transformed into a castle in the 14th century.
The castle accommodates the Archaeological Museum of
Tolentino which, among other things, displays an interesting collection
of finds of the Picene population. The itinerary continues in Caldarola to
visit another castle, Castello Pallotta, that from
a military seat was transformed to an elegant summer residence. Its
room were frescoed throughout by the painters De Magitris from Caldarola. Return
to the Hotel and accommodation.
